What does the number “50” mean when it comes to gardening?Posted: 4/14/2015 9:50:36 AM
It is the desired temperature number, 50-degrees Fahrenheit, which soil needs to be for planting and seeding!
For seeding or putting in new grass, the time to seed is late April (once the soil has reached that temperature mark), and it is suggested that you not apply crabgrass preventer.
For new grass, the time to plant is in late April or early May, so stop by Reynolds Garden Center to get the items you'll need for your upcoming projects.
The end of April is also the best time to plant cool season vegetables like lettuce, spinach, arugula, kale and radish. Reynolds Garden Center has these items plus many other plants, flowers and gardening materials to choose from.
Two other gardening tips for this time of year are 1) do not apply fertilizer until after the date of Memorial Day, and 2) rake your lawn only to pick up leaves or debris, or if the grass is flattened down. Your grass is coming out of a winter hibernation of sorts, so you don’t want to cause any damage with a strong raking at this time.
Reynolds carries a wide selection of plants, trees and shrubs which work well in the local soil and climate conditions.
